Wired Magazine has a great article about the biggest and best space vehicles ever launched.  While we are all aware of the Apollo programme and the huge Saturn rockets that took man further than he has ever been, this list also includes the Soviet era Venera and Vega missions to Venus, Almaz Soviet spy space stations and others.

This article makes one pause to think: on the one hand the magnificent space machines of the 1960s and 1970s represent technical accomplishments that we have not been able to surpass – despite most of the calculations being made with slide rules.  On the other hand, our potential ability to make bigger and better machines today is huge.  Combining the political will and funding of the 1960s with the technical capabilities that exist today could result in an incredible new dawn of the space age.
